This is Jennifer, one of the commuters like most of you. While my home is within 10 minutes’ drive to downtown, I always dream of owning an urban farm while enjoying the convenience of living in the city. BUT the problem is what can I grow all year around in Canada? What soil can I use indoor?
One day I came across this wonderful article talking about using spent coffee ground to grow oyster mushrooms. What a GREAT idea! The city has tons of such “waste” that we can make use of at very little cost.
I, myself, am not a biology graduate. However, it is really interesting to explore the fungi world and see how amazing and fast they grow when watching all the articles and videos. SO I decided to give it a try in 2016.
It has been a really challenge to grow mushrooms in Alberta, where it is dry and cold in the winter. But my husband supported my idea. He built a little humidity tent in the basement and picks up the coffee ground from a local coffee shop. After one year’s trial and error, we finally made good progress on our project.
Our goal is to make mushroom growing as easy as growing tomatoes to everyone who likes gardening and enjoy growing their own food. PLUS this is all ORGANIC. We are still in the product development stage of the mushroom kits. The kits can be used both indoor and outdoor, so ultimately in both summer and winter people can grow their gourmet mushrooms. You can follow us on our website or Facebook if you are interested.
We now supply the gourmet mushroom spawn. Please visit our store to see the varieties we currently offer. If you want a special kind such as shiitake mushroom, we can make it if the order size is large.
So this is our story and we are happy to hear all the stories of your mushroom growing experiences.
